What is Holistic Nutrition?

When I tell people I’m studying to become a ‘holistic nutritionist’ the first question I’m usually asked is  ‘Is that the same as a dietician?’

While there are some similarities between the two, there are also many differences. Although both dieticians and holistic nutritionists focus on nutrition and promoting the health and well-being of their clients, they differ in their approach. Each professional brings a unique skill set to the table, and it’s up to each individual to decide which specialist is right for them.

Registered dieticians tend to focus on the use of scientific research and tools such as Canada’s Food Guide and government-based calorie requirements to help explain and set goals. Their recommendations and treatment plans rely heavily on scientific research. They generally work in settings such as community health centres, hospitals, schools, and the food industry or in a private practice, working with patients who have already been diagnosed with health issues.

Registered Holistic Nutritionists work on an individual basis to optimize mental and physical health through diet and lifestyle. The term ‘holistic’ refers to whole or complete systems. Emphasis is placed on assessing the whole person and acknowledging that everyone is biochemically unique. No one diet or lifestyle is right for everyone all of the time. Environment, nutrition, physical needs and daily habits & are all taken into consideration in order to advise on how to achieve optimal health.

How can a Registered Holistic Nutritionist help you?

A holistic nutritionist will help you to understand the truth about real food and wellness, and will help you make the right food and lifestyle choices for you to reach your optimum self. A holistic nutritionist will also help guide you through the maze of confusing and often conflicting health and nutrition information out there, whether it be from magazines, books, TV,  or other individuals.

They’ll work on a one to one basis with you to help identify and correct any nutritional imbalances that may be potentially contributing or causing any ailments. They perform an in-depth assessment of your current diet, lifestyle and emotional health and will design a personalized menu plan and lifestyle program to help you achieve your personal health goals.

I hope that helps answer any questions you might have. I’m excited about finishing my course and helping people to discover the path that leads to a healthier, happier, and more energetic life. If you have any more questions, get in touch!
